Restoring Marriages Bible Study: Day 2

Marriage Restored

If you are just starting, please check out Restoring Marriages Bible Study: Day 1

Psalm 119:105 (NKJV)

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

Today we are going to discuss God’s word and how important it is for our lives. The number one way that we hear from God is through His word called the Bible. In the Bible we have God’s message, written through people, to everyone. God’s word is relevant and powerful. It is a guide for our entire life. There should never be a time in our life that we stop reading the Bible. During this time of rebuilding your marriage, reading the Bible together and individually should be one of the most important things you do.

Our verse today says that God’s word is lamp to our feet and a light to our path. This means that as we walk daily, if we are following God, His words will guide us. The Bible will be a “guide” of where we will go. This is regarding the decisions we make throughout the whole day. Many of these decisions will be about our marriage.

When you are having a difficult time in your marriage, where do you turn? Our current culture is hopeless when it comes to value in marriage. If we listen to ourselves, we’re sure to follow a bad path. However, if we listen to God, He will show us what we should do.

If you have felt like me, I was very confused when I found out my husband was addicted to pornography and that he was unfaithful to me. I was so hurt inside that I wondered if I should stay married to him. Our marriage was so broken that I didn’t know how it could ever be fixed. There were times when I was angry, sad, hurt, and many other things. My emotions were all over. So how could I count on myself for direction? I couldn’t. My husband was also suffering. He had tremendous feelings of guilt, shame, self-hatred, and anger. He did not know where to start either. There was only one thing we could truly do that would offer us hope.

We decided that we needed to hear from God. We made a simple commitment to read the Bible together every night. After reading, we talked. We talked about what we read and what was going on with each of us. Then we prayed. We prayed over our marriage, our family, and our struggles.

This seems so simple, but it was the single most important thing that restored our marriage. Our marriage was hopeless and we were both hurt and lost. The only thing that gave us hope was clinging to God’s promises. God’s word gives us specific instructions on how to live our life. He promises us hope, healing, forgiveness, love, trust, protection, guidance, and so many more things!

If you are in a broken place today, spending time listening to God through His word will begin your healing process. It will guide you as we go through this study to restore our marriages. Will you make a commitment today to read the Holy Bible each day as husband and wife? If you are doing this study alone, that’s okay too. God will begin working on your spouse as you seek Him.

Dear God,

We come to you today to make a commitment. Lord, we know how important Your word is. Life is so very busy. But, we can’t miss out on what You want to say to us. Please show us Your will through your word. Show us what you would have us do during this difficult time. God, we are willing to read the Bible together every day. Please hold us to this promise. Remind us and urge us when we are weary. It’s the most important thing we could together right now. And God, please keep working on us. Start healing our wounds and restoring us as we come to You. Come into our lives and start right at this moment. God, we thank You that You know everything and You know what is happening right now. We love you God and we believe that You are unfolding a plan for our marriage.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen

  1. Where in the bible did you start reading? Which passages have helped you the most during your healing time?

  2. Hi Lindsay,
I started in the gospel of John. The gospels are great (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) because we can hear Jesus’ exact words. We also can read His whole message and how it’s so opposite of what we would normally think in our life. I really needed to hear that. I also love the Psalms because they are so comforting. I hope that helps! Does anyone else have suggestions of where they like to start reading?
